History of Gloucester Rugby

Gloucester Rugby, affectionately known as the 'Cherry and Whites', proudly competes in the Premiership, England's premier rugby union division. For well over a century, this esteemed club has called Kingsholm Stadium its home, having played there since 1891. With a capacity of 16,000, this historic venue is regularly packed with dedicated supporters, creating a vibrant atmosphere every matchday.

As the new season kicks off, Gloucester Rugby will embark on their quest for success, aiming to secure a coveted top 4 spot in the Premiership standings. By doing so, they would earn a spot in the playoffs, providing them with an opportunity to vie for championship glory. The team's rich history and loyal fanbase will undoubtedly serve as motivation as they strive to make a lasting impact on the pitch.

The Beginning:

In 1873, a football club (how rugby was known at the time) was formed in Gloucester after a meeting at the Spread Eagle Hotel. The announcement was made in the Gloucester Journal, stating that the club's operations would begin at the Spa on the first Tuesday of the following month. The club organised a team to play against the college school, which took place on the current Kingsholm ground.

In 1891, the club acquired lands from the Castle Grim Estate for £4,000, and they have been playing their home fixtures at this site ever since. This area is known as Kingsholm. The team turned professional in 1995 after a set of wins.

Club History:

In 2008, Martin St Quinton acquired 25% of Gloucester Rugby and became vice chairman, focusing on sponsorships and non-playing areas. In the 2007-2008 season, Gloucester Rugby finished on top of the Guinness Premiership. They also made it to the EDF Energy Cup Final in the 2008-2009 season.

Gloucester Rugby won the Anglo-Welsh cup in the 2010-2011 season and made it to the Premiership playoffs that season. Bryan Redpath resigned as head coach in 2012 and was replaced by Nigel Davies. The club hosted international matches against Fiji in 2012 and Japan in 2013.

The team won the European Rugby Challenge Cup in the 2014-2015 season. Martin St Quinton acquired full ownership of the club in 2016. The team reached the final of the European Rugby Challenge Cup in the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons.

George Skivington became the new head coach in June 2020 with Alex Brown as the Chief Operating Officer. In July 2023, Brown was appointed interim CEO. In September 2023, Brown was made CEO and Skivington was promoted to Director of Rugby without impacting his role as head coach.
